My son has been fascinated with trains since he was a little boy. He loves to be around all types of trains, regardless of their size, shape, color or purpose. One of the television programs that my son enjoys is Thomas the Train. It is a great program because it teaches children about trains and because it teaches children about morality and doing what is right.
Because my son has autism I have always tried to encourage interests that he has developed. Since trains seemed to be one of his few passions, I took every advantage that I could to pair trains with new experiences and learning activities. One great way that I have found to do this is to use Thomas the Train toys and train sets to teach him about shapes, counting and relationships between items. For example, I could place a train toy in a tunnel and ask “where is Thomas?” The answer. “Thomas is in the tunnel.”
Finding toys that inspire children’s imagination is not always easy to do. Many toys take imagination out of the play experience. They provide animated characters, voices, and pre-programmed storylines. Fortunately toy trains still allow children to interact, play, imagine and create storylines all on their own. This, I think, is one of the true beauties of train toys and the reason why children still love to play with toy trains today, even though there are hundreds of more technologically advanced toys on the market.

My children enjoy the show “Thomas the Train” also. I am glad for shows like this on television. It is great that the kids can enjoy a show that also teaches them so much.
